A partnership of over 40 organisations all committed to working together to regenerate North Liverpool has been shortlisted for two awards for its contribution to regeneration and improving neighbourhoods in North Liverpool.

Beautiful North, which was formed nearly two years ago by Liverpool City Council, is a finalist in both the Award for Partnership Working at this year’s Regeneration and Renewal Awards, and the National Housing Federation’s Community Impact Awards for Improving Neighbourhoods.

The project is a partnership of public, private and voluntary sector organisations, including Merseytravel, Liverpool Biennial, PSS, Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue as well as housing associations Liverpool Housing Trust, Riverside, Your Housing, Liverpool Mutual Homes and Plus Dane Group.

All organisations involved have committed to collaborating, pooling their existing resources and doing things differently in North Liverpool to deliver joined up regeneration in the area and create opportunities for the residents and businesses who invest their lives and livelihoods in North Liverpool. Partners bring their own staff and resources and are asked to spend less on running and more on delivery, focusing on neighbourhood and not organisational objectives.

It has achieved significant success to date, with work ranging from cleaning up derelict sites through community clean up days and reducing the number of empty homes in the area, to securing a role for North Liverpool in major events such as the recent Sea Odyssey Giant Spectacular and creating jobs for young people through projects such as Liverpool Football Club and Liverpool City Council’s 20 Youth Ambassadors. Beautiful North is also working to change perceptions North Liverpool and showcase the best of what the area and its communities have to offer through the North Liverpool Show Your Beautiful Face campaign.

Councillor Steve Munby, Liverpool City Council cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “This is national recognition of the impact the Beautiful North is having on local communities. The regeneration of North Liverpool can only be delivered through a commitment of all organisations in the area working together and, more importantly working with local residents to make a real difference.”

Erika Ruston, Neighbourhoods Director at Plus Dane Group who works to coordinate Beautiful North alongside the Council, added:

“Beautiful North is a shining example of the difference that can be made through genuine collaboration. The partnership is only a success because every organisation involved has committed to working together, pooling staff and resources and most importantly, to doing things differently and breaking down the barriers that can prevent getting things done.

“We’re really noticing the benefits of this approach in the local area and ward councillors, local residents and business and football visitors are all telling us that they can see the difference that is being made.”

The NHF’s Community Impact Awards take place on 1st November. The award entry was written and submitted as a collaboration between the five housing associations involved in Beautiful North – Liverpool Housing Trust, Your Housing, Riverside, Liverpool Mutual Homes and Plus Dane Group.

The results of the Regeneration and Renewal Awards will be announced at an awards ceremony on 22nd November. Beautiful North is one of 64 finalists from over 220 entries and was selected by a panel of 45 expert judges.
